Pip's 1,000 book challenge is a fun, independent, and self-paced reading initiative designed to promote a strong literacy foundation in children ages 0-5. Start reading now and read 1,000 books by the time they are school ready and entering kindergarten.

Track your progress on our reading logs and earn prizes after 100, 300, 600, and 1,000 books!


About the Program

  • Obtain a reading log.
  • For every book read (repeats count), your child can color in a circle on the reading log.
  • You can also count any ‘early learning moments’ like singing a song, doing a fingerplay, or scribbling on a coloring sheet.
  • Bring the completed form to the library and earn incentives at 100, 300, 600, and 1,000 books!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 1,000 books before kindergarten?
Reading to children significantly boosts their language and cognitive development, while also fostering emotional bonds and a lifelong love for learning. It provides a foundation for academic success and broadens their understanding of the world.

Can we really read that many books before kindergarten?
Yes! If you read one book a day, you can complete the program within three years.

Can other people read to my child besides me?
Whether read by family, caregivers, or enjoyed at storytimes, all shared book experiences contribute to this reading program.

Can I count the same book more than once?
As repetition is important for children, books read more than once count towards the 1,000 book goal.

When is the deadline to finish reading 1,000 books?
This program is ongoing and can be completed at any point before your child begins kindergarten.

How old does my child have to be to participate?
There is no minimum age to participate. This program is for children from birth to not yet in kindergarten.
